I am heartsick to share with you - that around 4am on Friday morning (9.2.16), our precious boy was called from our world.

Though we've always been aware that Bonsai may not live a long life due to his rare combined conditions - he hadn't been sick... there was no warning - and we are still shocked at the sudden happenings.

Shortly after midnight on Thursday, I tucked him into his little bed as I do each night.... a few hours later I heard what sounded like a faint cough, little bark - and then nothing.

I got up from my desk - and in the time it took to walk across the room - Bonsai was gone...  his heart had stopped, just that quickly.

In rescue - primarily major medical / critical care rescue.... death becomes all too familiar - and we learn to work through the sadness and devastation, barely missing a beat - because that's what we HAVE to do for the others who count on us.......... but this one totally took me down - and I needed just a little time to process and mourn the loss of the boy who stole our hearts and ruled every moment of my world for the past 16 months.

With dogs arriving from Greece that very afternoon, critical pups to care for and all that goes along with the day to day of a major medical rescue home - - we couldn't just stop doing what we do each day.... but I also couldn't bear to share our sorrow with the public, so forgive me for waiting until now to bring you the sad news.

Bonsai's passing comes on the heels of another of our rescue angels who left us a couple of weeks ago... little Cecilia - who had been with us for 3 and a half years and battled congestive heart failure and then cancer........ so this is doubly hard on our hearts.

We will get through the days - the long nights - carry on as is needed for the little ones in our care - and those who continue to find their way to us..... because that's what we do.

Bonsai's life was not in vain ~ his brilliant spirit will shine on in all of us...

We'll see you again my prince ~ healthy and whole.......... we love you endlessly. ♥

Bonsai is the official mascot for the
International Sacral Agenesis / Caudal Regression Association  www.isacra.org

Bonsai was an English Bulldog with multiple deformities.
He was born with just half of his spine, no pelvis and malformed rear legs.

Sadly, in the early hours of September 2nd 2016 - Bonsai passed away after a beautiful and strong-lived 16 months.

Bonsai was afflicted with a HUMAN condition known as Sacral Agenesis (Caudal Regression Syndrome) and Sacrocaudal Dysgenesis - likely combined with a variation of Spina Bifida.

In layman's terms, Bonsai was born with only half of his spine, no functional pelvis and with tiny contracted hind legs.

To our knowledge, there is not another documented case worldwide, of an animal living with Sacral Agenesis.

Bonsai underwent a bilateral amputation of both of his useless hind legs (on 6.25.15) and did beautifully in his recovery.

While Bonsai may have been "just a dog" to some - EVERY living thing has something beautiful to offer... for Bonsai, we hope part of that has been to inspire a connection with his human counterparts - bridging the gap between the human and animal experience.

Bonsai was a critical care rescue resident of Friends Of Emma - located in Fort Worth, TX.

We appreciate the great interest and concern for this little Bulldog, who lived a beautiful life, despite these rare congenital anomalies. ♥

We thank you for joining in his journey.
